What is NASA-PEER?

NASA-PEER provides targeted programming regarding the graduate school and job application processes, professional enrichment activities, and skill development workshops. Additionally, we seek to help post-bacs increase feelings of belonging within NASA Goddard and the scientific workforce by providing opportunities for community building and visibility.

Post-bacs are hired by various institutions to work within the Science and Exploration Directorate at NASA Goddard. Post-bac positions serve as an opportunity for recent bachelor’s degree graduates to work alongside NASA scientists as full-time researchers to gain knowledge, experience the life of a researcher, and discover firsthand the missions and research at GSFC/NASA. NASA-PEER is not directly involved in hiring post-bacs. If you are interested in becoming a post-bac researcher at NASA GSFC, check if positions are available on the CRESST II, GESTAR II, PHaSER, and ADNET sites.

Bridging the gap in professional, scientific, and social support, during one of the most vulnerable stages of an academic career.

  • Compassionate Frankness: Academic science fields are only getting more and more competitive, and there are lots of successes and rejections. We strive to find the balance between giving constructive feedback and empowering post-bacs to grow to their fullest potential.
  • Following Their Lead (while giving them all the information they need): We believe the post-bacs have agency over their own lives to make the decisions they feel best for themselves. From when to apply to graduate school to which career paths are best for them — we give them our opinions and resources to the best of our abilities, but ultimately support their decisions.
  • Constellation of Support: We believe it takes a village. We teach our post-bacs how to build their own mentorship networks, starting with the constellations!

NASA-PEER is divided into two main components, weekly programmatics and mentorship groups meetings. Weekly programmatics encompass many areas relevant to post-bacs over their year at NASA GSFC. Programmatic topics include the following:
